Manchester United great, Rio Ferdinand, has weighed in on manager Ruben Amorim’s remarks regarding Kobbie Mainoo’s role at the club.
Amorim, after United’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Fulham at the weekend, suggested that Mainoo would need to compete with Bruno Fernandes for a place in the starting lineup.
Mainoo, 20, is yet to feature in the league this season, having remained on the bench against Arsenal and Fulham. The young midfielder currently sits behind Fernandes, Casemiro, Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte in Amorim’s midfield hierarchy.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former England defender described Mainoo’s chances as slim, arguing that unseating the captain would be nearly impossible.
“If Mainoo has to dislodge the captain [to get into Man United’s starting XI like Amorim stated], he is fighting a losing battle, is not he? Bruno Fernandes has been the talisman for this team for the last three or four years,” Ferdinand said.
“How is Mainoo going to displace someone like him? It’s going to be nearly impossible. Bruno is the guy they look to when they need a goal, when they need a moment, when they want a chance.”
