The Federal Government has downplayed a recent security advisory issued by the United States Embassy restricting its staff from non-official travel to military or government facilities in Abuja, insisting that the Federal Capital Territory remains safe for residents and visitors.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Monday, reaffirmed the government’s confidence in the nation’s security architecture and described the U.S. advisory as precautionary and not reflective of any specific threat within Abuja.

“While we respect the right of foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy, to issue travel advisories to their citizens, it is essential to emphasise that Abuja is secure,” Idris said.

He noted that Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies are actively safeguarding the capital and have recorded major successes in detecting and preventing threats.

According to him, “The advisory appears to stem from general global trends rather than any imminent threat in the FCT. We urge diplomatic missions, investors, and the public to remain calm and go about their normal activities.”

The minister further reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety nationwide, stressing that Abuja remains one of the most secure capital cities globally.

“We encourage all citizens to stay alert, engage in lawful activities without fear, and report any suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities,” he added.
