The Federal Government says security agencies acted swiftly to contain the recent violence in Plateau State, deploying troops and launching coordinated operations to restore order.

Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said troops under Operation Enduring Peace were immediately mobilised after distress calls from affected communities.

According to him, personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, alongside other security agencies, secured the area, blocked key access routes and initiated search-and-clearance operations to track down those responsible.

He noted that the rapid intervention helped contain the situation and prevented further escalation of violence.

Mr Idris explained that the response is part of a broader federal strategy to stabilise Plateau State and the wider North-Central region, which has witnessed recurring security challenges.

He said security forces have intensified intelligence-driven operations across vulnerable communities, supported by increased troop deployments, surveillance and joint patrols involving the police and military.

“These coordinated efforts are designed to neutralise threats proactively and maintain stability,” he said.

As part of ongoing efforts, President Bola Tinubu convened a high-level meeting with top security and intelligence officials to assess the situation and consider further steps.

Following the meeting, the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, was invited to Abuja for consultations aimed at developing a coordinated approach to restoring lasting peace.

Mr Idris said details of the outcome of the meeting would be made public in due course.

Curfew, Joint Operations

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North to prevent reprisals and stabilise the area.

The minister said state authorities are working closely with federal security agencies to restore calm and support ongoing investigations.

While acknowledging the gravity of the incident, Mr Idris maintained that it does not indicate a collapse of national security.

He described the violence as a criminal act occurring in a conflict-prone area, adding that authorities are taking decisive action to address it.

“The Federal Government has directed all security agencies to ensure that those responsible are identified, apprehended and brought to justice,” he said.

Mr Idris assured that ongoing operations are already yielding actionable intelligence and vowed that perpetrators would be held accountable.

He also urged Nigerians to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and avoid spreading unverified information that could worsen tensions.

Reaffirming the government’s position, he said efforts would continue in collaboration with the Plateau State Government and other stakeholders to secure lives and ensure lasting peace.
