FG Secures Freedom of Six Nigerian Women Detained in Cape Verde
The Federal Government has successfully secured the release of six Nigerian women who were wrongfully detained in Cape Verde over false allegations of human trafficking.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the women have been released and have since departed the country.
According to the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Nigerian Mission in Guinea Bissau played a key role in facilitating their release through sustained diplomatic engagement with Cape Verdean authorities.
The statement revealed that the women had travelled to Cape Verde for a holiday but were unexpectedly arrested and accused of trafficking — claims that were later found to be baseless.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to happily inform you that the Nigerian nationals (ladies) who were detained in Cape Verde have all been released and have left the country, too,” the statement read. “The Ministry engaged Cape Verde authorities via our Mission in Guinea Bissau to secure their release.”
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, the Ministry expressed satisfaction with the outcome and assured continued efforts to ensure the rights and welfare of citizens overseas.
