Janne Puhakka, Finland’s first openly gay ice hockey player, was found dead in his home in Espoo on Sunday evening following a suspected shooting.
The 29-year-old was discovered at the apartment he shared with his partner, Rolf Nordmo, 65, who has since been arrested.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the identities of the victim and suspect, but lead investigator Matti Högman indicated that the two knew each other, and the crime is being investigated as a possible premeditated act. “We have reason to suspect that the act was deliberate,” Högman stated.
Tributes have poured in for Puhakka, including from former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, who shared a heartfelt message alongside a broken heart emoji.
The Western Uusimaa Police Department confirmed the homicide investigation, revealing that a man was taken into custody without resistance. According to police, no other individuals were involved, and the incident posed no risk to the public.
