Former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant Resigns from Knesset

Former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has officially announced his resignation from the Knesset, marking the end of his decades-long career in public service and the military.

Gallant, who had been at odds with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the handling of the Gaza conflict, made the announcement in a televised address on Wednesday.

“Soon, I will convey to the Speaker of the Knesset my decision to end my duties as the 25th member of the Knesset after 45 years of service and missions for the State of Israel. Thirty-five years in the IDF. A decade as a member of the Knesset and as a minister in the governments of Israel, including two dramatic years as Minister of Defence,” Gallant stated.

His resignation comes less than two months after Netanyahu dismissed him from the defence ministry amid disputes over strategies in Gaza. Gallant had advocated for diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Israeli hostages, clashing with Netanyahu’s insistence on military pressure against Hamas.

Despite his removal from the ministerial post, Gallant retained his parliamentary seat until now. His departure signals a significant moment in Israeli politics, as the country continues to navigate internal disagreements over its approach to the Gaza conflict.
