Fondly known as “Dodomayana,” Rufai passed away on the morning of Thursday, July 3, after battling a prolonged illness, according to family sources.

Rufai enjoyed a distinguished 20-year career as a professional goalkeeper, playing in top leagues across Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. He was widely celebrated for his agility, leadership, and remarkable performances between the sticks.

On the international stage, Rufai earned acclaim as Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, representing the country in two FIFA World Cups and multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments. He was part of the golden generation that helped elevate Nigerian football in the 1990s.
