From Almajiri to Graduate: Ahmad Isah’s Journey of Hope, Skill, Service

Ahmad Isah’s transformation from an Almajiri child to a university graduate has been hailed as a powerful example of what compassion, mentorship and equal opportunity can achieve in Nigeria.

Recalling Isah’s early years, his Islamic teacher, Hassan Yalwawa, said the journey began when Isah arrived to study the Qur’an at the age of five.

“Today, he is a graduate. This shows that other Almajiri children can also rise to great heights,” Yalwawa noted, describing the achievement as a beacon of hope for vulnerable children across the country.

Alongside his academic pursuits, Isah also learned tailoring, a practical skill that has become a source of empowerment and livelihood. He now runs a thriving tailoring shop on Hakimi Street in Dutse, where he mentors five apprentices, passing on skills and discipline to the next generation.

Beyond personal success, Isah’s story reflects the impact of unity across cultural and religious lines. A Hausa/Fulani boy supported by an Edo benefactor, his journey underscores the values of empathy, shared responsibility and national cohesion.

Reflecting on the milestone, Maiyaki described Isah’s progress as a testament to what is possible when children are given love, understanding and opportunity. “What a change, what a chance, what an opportunity,” he said. “True patriotism transcends tribe, faith and background—it nurtures the potential of every Nigerian child.”

Isah’s rise from the streets to academic success continues to inspire conversations on education reform, social inclusion and the urgent need to invest in the future of Nigeria’s most vulnerable children.
