The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has lauded the ongoing road reconstruction projects in Enugu State under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, describing them as aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on road safety.
Speaking during a press briefing in Enugu on Wednesday to commemorate the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week, the FRSC Sector Commander in Enugu State, Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, commended the administration for its pedestrian-friendly road infrastructure.
The week-long event, themed “Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe,” runs from May 12 to May 18, 2025, and is focused on promoting the safety of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Agbakoba highlighted the state’s incorporation of spacious walkways, modern bus stops, and street lighting as critical components of safer roads. “With new road design with spacious walkways and other furniture made compulsory in all roads, Gov. Mbah has prioritised the safety and security of pedestrians walking in all major roads within the state,” he said.
He emphasized that these developments contribute directly to one of the major goals of the UN in ensuring safe mobility for all. “The Gov. Mbah led administration had achieved one of the major goals of the UN,” Agbakoba noted.
The Sector Commander revealed that the FRSC’s activities during the week would focus on education campaigns for vulnerable road users. He stressed the importance of collective responsibility in reducing road accidents and fatalities, especially for non-motorized transport users.
“As a Corps, we have continued to generate strategies to meet these glaring challenges. We have intensified our public enlightenment campaigns both in the state and nationwide,” Agbakoba stated.
He further explained that efforts include promoting road safety clubs in schools, advocating for the integration of walkways, zebra crossings, and cycling lanes into road designs, as well as monitoring driver behavior and enforcing speed limits.
“FRSC is also monitoring drivers’ behaviour in high-risk routes, enforce speed limits and also ensure well-structured safety education for children and youths to imbibe positive road culture and habits,” he added.
Calling on all stakeholders to support the initiative, Agbakoba said, “As a lead agency in road safety administration and traffic management, FRSC will continue to drive interventions to save lives, but we cannot do this on our own; we needed everyone’s support and cooperation.”
Activities for the UN Global Road Safety Week in Enugu include a sensitisation rally, distribution of flyers, safety education visits to selected schools, and outreach by the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association (ROSOWA) to fleet operators and orphanage homes. The week will also feature commemorative Juma’at prayers and a church service.
