The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for the cooperation and support of motorists to help bring an end to the spate of road traffic crashes on Nigerian highways.
Speaking in Abeokuta on Monday during the inauguration of a new health facility at the FRSC office, Mrs. Ann Odeleye, Acting Zonal Commanding Officer for Lagos and Ogun states, emphasised the need for collective responsibility in ensuring safer roads.
The health facility, which was donated by the State Special Marshals, is situated within the command and is expected to enhance the welfare and emergency medical response capabilities of the Corps in the state.
Odeleye stressed that all stakeholders must unite to tackle the recurring menace of road accidents, which frequently result in loss of lives and property.
“FRSC 2025 goal is about the reduction of road crashes and zero tolerance of crashes on the highway, including Lagos – Ibadan,” she declared.
She appealed to motorists and road users to drive cautiously and perform regular safety checks on their vehicles, particularly tyres, before setting out on any journey.
“We also want to urge motorists to check their tyres everyday before driving,” Odeleye said.
She also warned drivers against drinking and driving, stating that, “If they must drink alcohol, they should distance themselves from driving.”
Commending the State Special Marshals for the donation of the health facility, Odeleye acknowledged that government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of providing essential infrastructure and urged other stakeholders to follow their example.
“It was important for well-meaning individuals and other stakeholders to offer their support,” she said.
The newly commissioned health facility is expected to bolster FRSC’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies, contributing to its overarching goal of reducing road crashes and fatalities in the region.
