The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Benue, Steve Ayodele, has urged passengers to actively speak up against reckless driving, stressing that such actions contribute significantly to road fatalities, often impacting passengers more than drivers.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday in Makurdi, Ayodele highlighted that human factors are responsible for 80% of road crashes, with the remaining 20% attributed to mechanical and environmental issues.
“The rise in road accidents and fatalities during the ember months results largely from human lawlessness and disregard for traffic rules,” Ayodele said. He noted that festive activities toward the year’s end lead to a surge in traffic, increasing risks on the roads.
The FRSC official pointed to speeding, overloading, poor vehicle maintenance, and driving under the influence as key contributors to road crashes. He also warned of the dangers of driving with worn-out tires, fatigue, and carrying mixed cargoes like human, agricultural, and fuel loads.
