Germany mourns Aschaffenburg stabbing victims as probes begin

German investigators are searching for motive after the deadly stabbing attack in a park in the southern city of Aschaffenburg.

Mayor Jürgen Herzing planned to lay a wreath at the scene of the incident on Thursday, a day after a two-year-old child and a 41-year-old man were killed by suspected Afghan asylum, believed to have history of psychological problems.

Three others were wounded during the incidence, which took place one month before Germany heads to the polls on Feb. 23, some weeks after a car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg.

No further information on the condition of the injured has been released.

The suspect was scheduled to be brought before a magistrate later on Thursday, expected to decide whether the 28-year-old will be placed in a psychiatric ward or remanded in custody.

However, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said on Wednesday that investigators found no evidence that the suspect had Islamist motives.

“At the moment, the speculation is very much in the direction of his obvious mental illness,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, an alliance of local organisations is planning a silent commemoration in the park Thursday evening
