Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Chairman of the African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan, has urged presidential candidates in Ghana’s upcoming election to prioritize adherence to the rule of law throughout the electoral process.

Speaking in Accra on Thursday during the signing of a peace pact by the candidates, Chambas emphasized the importance of peaceful and fair elections as a cornerstone of democracy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ghana’s presidential election is scheduled for Dec. 7. A copy of Chambas’ keynote address at the event was made available to NAN in Abuja on Friday.

Chambas described the peace pact as a significant step toward ensuring a violence-free election, stressing that it sends a clear message to party supporters about the importance of peaceful conduct.

“When the Heads of State of Africa adopted the Silencing the Guns Initiative, they envisioned a continent at peace with itself and the world,” Chambas said. He noted that poorly conducted elections remain a major trigger of conflict across Africa.

Highlighting Ghana’s reputation as a model for election management and democratic processes, Chambas commended the country for its innovations and best practices. However, he cautioned against complacency, urging stakeholders—including the Electoral Commission, security agencies, political activists, the media, and the judiciary—to remain vigilant.

“There can be no complacency. Ghana’s past successes are no guarantee of current or future performance,” he warned.

Chambas also called on African leaders to work toward a peaceful continent, focusing on addressing underdevelopment, poverty, and inequality. He reaffirmed the collective desire for Africa to serve as a beacon of stability and progress in the global arena.
