The Government of Ghana says it is deeply alarmed by what it describes as a unilateral and unauthorised military invasion of Venezuela by the United States, and by the subsequent abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

In a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana expresses strong reservations against any unilateral use of force and strongly deplores acts that violate the Charter of the United Nations and international law, as well as the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of states.

Ghana says it is following the situation with great concern, warning that assaults on international law, attempts to occupy foreign territories and apparent external control of oil resources have extremely adverse implications for international stability and the global order.

The statement also raises alarm over remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump noting that the United States would run Venezuela until a safe, proper and judicious transition could occur, and that large U.S. oil companies would be asked to enter the country. Ghana describes these declarations as reminiscent of the colonial and imperialist era, saying they set a dangerous precedent for the global order.

Affirming its commitment to self‑determination, Ghana says only the Venezuelan people should freely determine their political and democratic future.

The government calls for an immediate de‑escalation and the release of President Maduro and his wife, and vows to maintain and defend its long‑held principled position against invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid, disregard for sovereignty and all forms of violation of international law.
