Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has called on motorists to adopt safer road practices to minimize crashes during the “Ember Months” period. Represented by the Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transportation, Malam Usman Kallamu, Yahaya delivered this message at the launch of the 2024 Ember Months campaign in Gombe on Thursday.
Highlighting the theme, “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving; Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers,” Yahaya emphasized the importance of responsible road behavior and adherence to traffic regulations. He pointed out that while the state has invested in road infrastructure, safety ultimately depends on the attitudes of road users.
“The eagerness to obey traffic rules and share the road respectfully are key to ensuring safety,” Yahaya said. He expressed concerns over the rise in substance abuse among youth, noting that drug and alcohol use are major factors behind avoidable crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
The governor also urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to adapt its operations to meet current road safety challenges and commended its commitment to continuous public awareness campaigns.
