Gospel Singer ‘New Jerusalem’ Dies at 53, Tributes Pour In
Renowned Nigerian gospel singer, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53, leaving the Christian community in Benue State and beyond in mourning.
Known for his unique blend of Tiv Swange rhythms and gospel music, New Jerusalem built a legacy that resonated with both local and international audiences. His songs inspired worshippers across the globe, earning him widespread respect as a dedicated minister of the gospel through music.
Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the singer’s residence in Makurdi alongside members of the Brethren Prayer Group. He described the late artist as “a devoted Christian whose songs deeply touched my heart.”
Ortom also recounted seeing a program in Australia where a Tiv man played New Jerusalem’s music while teaching, a moment he said reflected the singer’s far-reaching impact.
Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the late singer’s elder brother, expressed gratitude for Ortom’s support throughout Israel’s illness. He revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in appreciation of the former governor’s kindness.
Prayers during the condolence visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo.
New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, fellow gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, and four children.
His burial will take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
