Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has pledged to strengthen security along the state’s borders to address issues of illegal mining, boundary disputes, and safety concerns.

Otu made this commitment on Friday in Calabar during a meeting with elders and stakeholders of the state, emphasizing the importance of enhanced border security for both economic growth and the well-being of citizens.

The governor noted that Cross River has experienced a surge in illegal mining activities and boundary disputes with neighboring states in recent years. He assured the stakeholders of his administration’s plans to intensify boundary monitoring and ensure citizen safety.

Speaking on the clashes between farmers and herdsmen in Odukpani, Otu described some of the conflicts as stemming from “avoidable misunderstandings.”

“We are committed to achieving lasting peace. Cross River people are peaceful and hospitable, but our kindness must not be mistaken for weakness,” he said.

Addressing illegal mining, Otu expressed concern over the exploitation of the state’s natural resources. “We are planning to collaborate with security agencies to ensure stricter enforcement,” he added.

The governor also highlighted his administration’s focus on sustainable infrastructure development to promote public welfare. “We are constructing roads, hospitals, and schools across the state. These infrastructures are needed to support the wellbeing of the people,” he said.

Col. Pam Ogar (Rtd), Leader of the Cross River Elders’ Forum, praised Governor Otu for convening the meeting, describing it as timely and impactful.

“This meeting has enabled stakeholders to evaluate critical issues such as boundary disputes and illegal mining. I urge the government to conduct a headcount of those involved in mining to identify and regulate their operations,” Ogar said.

He noted that such measures would help prevent security breaches resulting from unregulated mining activities.

The meeting reaffirmed the governor’s commitment to prioritizing security, peace, and infrastructure development for the progress of Cross River State.
