Guangdong Province to Expand Gender-Neutral and Child-Friendly Toilets

Guangdong Province in China has announced plans to revamp its public toilet infrastructure, introducing more gender-neutral and child-friendly facilities to address issues like long queues at women’s restrooms and inadequate family amenities.

The Guangzhou Public Sanitation Toilet Layout Plan (2024-2035), published on the city’s Bureau of Coordinated Administrative Law Enforcement for Urban Management website, has been opened for public feedback since Monday.

The initiative includes converting underutilized male restrooms and facilities with an imbalanced ratio of male-to-female stalls into gender-neutral restrooms. It also emphasizes creating child-friendly toilets with features designed to meet the needs of families with young children.

With a population exceeding 18 million, Guangzhou aims to construct or upgrade 933 public toilets by 2035 as part of this plan.

The initiative builds on China’s “toilet revolution,” launched in 2015 to improve the quality and availability of toilets at tourist sites. The campaign has since expanded to enhance public toilets in urban areas and improve private sanitation facilities in rural communities.

The government’s focus on inclusive sanitation facilities highlights its commitment to creating equitable access to essential amenities for all citizens. Public feedback will help shape the final version of the plan.
