The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) has made notable progress in combating malaria despite global challenges, working to secure support for replenishing the Global Fund, stated Umaro Sissoco Embaló, President of Guinea-Bissau, during the General Debate of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Embaló, who also serves as ALMA President, emphasized collaborative efforts with the private sector to promote the production of malaria drugs and nets. “We have actively encouraged technology transfer to African companies, launched End Malaria Councils and Funds, and supported youth movements in the fight against malaria,” he said.
However, despite these achievements, significant challenges remain. Embaló noted that ALMA would face a funding deficit of 1.5 billion U.S. dollars over the next three years.
The president also expressed concern about the impact of climate change on malaria, explaining that global warming and associated rainfall are expanding the reach of mosquitoes, now threatening over 170 million people across the African continent.
Embaló concluded by calling for a reform of the international financial system to promote greater inclusion, particularly for Africa, and to recognize the continent’s role and contributions to the global economy.
