Health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals have given the Federal Government a 15-day ultimatum to meet their demands or face a nationwide strike.

JOHESU, which includes the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, and other related unions, announced the ultimatum in a memo addressed to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate.

The memo, signed by JOHESU National President Mr. Kabir Minjibir and Secretary Mr. Martin Engbanubi, warned that if their welfare issues are not addressed by October 25, members in federal health institutions will begin a seven-day strike.

JOHESU highlighted unresolved issues including the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), the implementation of a consultant cadre for pharmacists, and raising the retirement age for health workers.

The union also demanded the payment of COVID-19 inducement allowances, arrears of salary reviews, and the suspension of the planned National Health Facility Regulatory Agency.

Minjibir emphasized that while JOHESU has shown patience and patriotism, the government’s prolonged delays have forced them to take this step.
