Intense rainfall lashed Tokyo and surrounding areas on Thursday, bringing parts of the city’s rail network to a standstill and prompting travel disruptions, local media reported.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward saw approximately 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) of rain fall within a single hour.
The downpour forced authorities to temporarily suspend bullet train operations between Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and Shin-Yokohama Station in Kanagawa Prefecture. The disruption was due to flooding concerns in Kawasaki, located along the route, according to Kyodo News.
While services have since resumed in some areas, authorities remain on alert for further disruptions as heavy rainfall continues to affect the region.
