An 81-year-old high school basketball coach, Jim Zullo, is now facing legal consequences after being fired for pulling a female player’s hair during a championship game.
Zullo, the former head coach of Northville High School’s girls’ basketball team, has been charged with second-degree harassment and has been issued a court summons, according to the Hudson Valley Community College Department of Public Safety. He is expected to appear in Troy City Court at a later date, where he could face up to 15 days in jail if found guilty. Other potential penalties include a $250 fine or community service.
The incident occurred after Northville lost 43-37 in the New York State Class D championship game. Video footage showed Zullo grabbing senior player Hailey Monroe by the hair and yelling at her. Another player, identified as Ahmya Tompkins—reportedly Zullo’s niece—stepped in between them, leading to a heated exchange between her and the coach.
After the footage went viral, Zullo issued an apology, acknowledging that his actions were unacceptable.
“I deeply regret my behavior,” he told ABC News. “As a coach, under no circumstance is it acceptable to put my hands on a player, and I am truly sorry. I wish I could have those moments back.”
School officials swiftly terminated Zullo’s employment following the backlash. Reports indicate that the altercation stemmed from Monroe allegedly swearing at Zullo after he instructed her to shake hands with the opposing team.
The case has sparked debate about coaching conduct and disciplinary actions in high school sports, as Zullo prepares to defend himself in court.
