The Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee recognized their decades-long fight for a nuclear-free world, emphasizing the need for nations to strengthen the “nuclear taboo.” Hibakusha, survivors of the bombings, have long advocated for the abolition of nuclear weapons, sharing their painful testimonies to prevent future use of such devastating arms.

Nihon Hidankyo’s co-chair, Toshiyuki Mimaki, expressed hope that this recognition would bolster global efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons, stating, “Nuclear weapons should absolutely be abolished.” With over 106,000 survivors still living in Japan, the group continues to fight for peace and awareness of the long-term effects of nuclear weapons.

The award comes as tensions rise globally, with countries like Russia and North Korea making nuclear threats. The Nobel Committee’s decision highlights the growing risks posed by modernizing arsenals and reinforces the importance of preserving nearly eight decades of non-use of nuclear weapons.
