Hundreds Feared Missing as Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Malaysia–Thailand Border
A migrant boat carrying an estimated 300 people has capsized near the maritime boundary between Malaysia and Thailand, leaving hundreds missing and feared dead. Authorities confirmed that only 10 individuals have been rescued so far, while the body of one woman, believed to be Rohingya, has been recovered.
According to initial findings, the vessel is believed to have departed from Myanmar’s Rakhine State before breaking into smaller boats near the border in an attempt to evade maritime patrols. Those on board were largely Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals seeking safety and work opportunities in Malaysia.
Search and rescue efforts are currently being carried out by both Malaysian and Thai authorities, though officials warn the number of casualties may rise due to strong sea currents and rough weather conditions in the area.
The incident has once again drawn international attention to the dangerous sea routes taken by migrants fleeing conflict, persecution, and economic hardship in the region. Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
