Controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to prioritize police reform before the end of his tenure.

In a video posted on Saturday, August 23, the outspoken artist emphasized that true leadership goes beyond economic policies and should also focus on protecting the rights and dignity of citizens.

“Mr. President, before you leave office—whether or not you get a second term—try your best to improve Nigeria. Everything isn’t about the economy,” he said. “Even your own people are complaining. The only people praising you are those you gave jobs.”

Speed Darlington, who is of Igbo origin, specifically called for the reform of the Nigeria Police Force, describing it as a system rooted in the violation of human rights.

“The Nigerian police is an oppressive agency. If they don’t violate you, it’s like they’re not doing their job. The idea of arrest before investigation is a pure human rights violation.”

He further urged President Tinubu to speak with the Inspector General of Police, stressing the need for urgent institutional changes.

Recounting his personal experience, the singer claimed he was unlawfully detained for two months—well beyond the legal limit—despite a court order for his release.

“I was held for two months after the judge had ordered my release. According to my lawyer, the law allows only 28 days for investigation. They held me for two months. Why? Because they can. If you pay them, they oppress your enemy. I’ve experienced it.”

Speed Darlington concluded his message by urging the president to take action that would leave a lasting, positive legacy.
