IGP Open Squash Classics Heats Up as Players Sharpen Skills for National Sports Festival

The IGP Open Contenders Invitational Classics has kicked off in thrilling fashion, offering Nigeria’s top squash talents a timely platform to prepare for the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

Tournament Director, Oluwaseun Peters, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday that the three-day competition, which began on May 13 and will end on May 15, features 28 players battling for honours and form.

“This is a timely event giving players the chance to fine-tune preparations for the 22nd National Sports Festival, set to take place in Ogun State,” Peters said.

He described the tournament’s opening as impressive, highlighting the level of intensity and competitiveness displayed on the courts.

“So far, the competition has produced classic matchups. The players are determined and have shown great effort in showcasing their skills on the court.

“The matches have been entertaining, with thrilling moments and high-tempo action recorded throughout the tournament’s opening stages.

“Younger players have seized the opportunity to prove themselves, while professionals have used it to reinforce their dominance and experience.

“We’re proud of what we’ve seen so far and look forward to more exciting squash action before the tournament concludes,” he added.

Also speaking, Chair of Police Sports, CSP Charity Enebeli, said the event is part of efforts to promote grassroots squash development.

“We organised the tournament to support squash development among our youth and contribute to the sport’s overall growth.

“We anticipate an exciting tournament, with players giving their best and aiming for something tangible at the end,” she said.

Similarly, Chairman of Yellow Dot Squash Club, Shola Adekunle, expressed delight with the level of play and commended the Nigeria Police for hosting the event.

“On the first day, I witnessed a high level of professionalism and great energy from the players, which is very encouraging.

“It’s been a very competitive event. I look forward to more matches and enjoying the atmosphere.

“I thank the Nigeria Police for organising this. It’s a laudable initiative that will positively impact players’ development,” Adekunle said.

Players also expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the tournament is helping them prepare both physically and mentally for the national games.

Abdulrahman Ahmed, ranked number 13 nationally, said: “I want to win the men’s singles to carry that winning spirit into the National Sports Festival.”

In the women’s singles, Jadesola Olatunji is aiming for the final. “I’ve seen strong competition, but I’m staying focused on my games and aiming to perform well overall,” she said.

Day One results saw intense battles on the court. Asade Samson edged Samuel Nduka-Uba 11-7, 10-12, 11-7 (2-1), while Usman Musa defeated Balogun Abubakar 10-12, 11-7, 11-8 (2-1).

Dele Prat overcame Farooq Suleiman 11-6, 13-11 (2-0), and Dominion Utake saw off Yusuf Quadri 11-6, 11-9, 5-11 (2-1). Lanre Abdulrahman beat Ayomide Oladipo in straight sets (2-0), just as Ayomide Oladipupo cruised past Usman Musa 11-0, 11-0 (2-0).

With two days left, fans and officials alike are anticipating more high-octane squash action as the tournament approaches its climax.
