India Bans All Imports From Pakistan Amid Kashmir Attack Fallout
India has announced an immediate ban on all imports from Pakistan, both direct and indirect, amid escalating tensions following a deadly attack in Kashmir last month that killed 26 people.
In a notification released late Friday, the Indian Commerce Ministry stated: “Direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect, until further order.” The restriction, it added, was imposed “in the interest of national security and public policy.”
The move deepens the diplomatic rift between the nuclear-armed neighbors since the April 22 attack in the Pahalgam tourist resort in Indian-administered Kashmir. India has blamed Pakistan for the assault, citing “cross-border links,” a charge Islamabad denies. Pakistan has instead called for a neutral probe involving third-party monitoring.
In response to the attack, both countries have implemented tit-for-tat measures, including banning trade, suspending visas, and recalling diplomatic staff. India also announced a halt to its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty—a key water-sharing agreement signed in 1960.
Amid the growing tensions, several nations, including the United States, have urged restraint and called on both governments to pursue dialogue and avoid further escalation.
