India Reopens 32 Airports After Ceasefire Eases Tensions With Pakistan

India reopened 32 airports on Monday after a weekend ceasefire with Pakistan brought an end to the most intense cross-border fighting between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in over two decades.

The Airports Authority of India announced that airports ranging from Srinagar in the contested Kashmir region to Bhuj in Gujarat state were now operational “with immediate effect” for civil aviation.

The airports had been shut last week amid four days of heavy clashes that raised fears of a broader military conflict reminiscent of the 1999 Kargil War.

Indian airline IndiGo said it would gradually resume flights on affected routes, as normalcy begins to return.

The ceasefire, brokered on Saturday, temporarily halted hostilities, although both countries exchanged accusations of violating the truce shortly after its announcement. Despite the tension, calm was reported along the border areas on Monday, according to officials from both sides.

At airports like Shri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar, Punjab, security remained tight as personnel continued identity checks on staff and travelers amid lingering concerns.

The international community has called for restraint and dialogue as the two nations navigate a fragile peace.
