Indonesia Marks 79th Independence Day with Ceremonies in New Capital Nusantara
Indonesia celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Saturday with significant ceremonies held in its newly inaugurated capital, Nusantara. The national flag-hoisting event, a highlight of the day, was conducted at the State Palace in Nusantara. President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, and President-elect Prabowo Subianto were present at the ceremony, as reported by Antara News.
Simultaneously, the ceremony was broadcast live to Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, where Vice President Ma’ruf Amin and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son, participated in the celebrations.
Indonesia declared its independence from the Netherlands on August 17, 1945. This year, the Independence Day theme, “New Nusantara, Advanced Indonesia,” reflects the nation’s forward-looking spirit as it transitions to its new capital.
President Widodo began working from Nusantara last month, though the official inauguration of the capital was planned to coincide with Independence Day. The first phase of the $32 billion capital city project has seen over 80% of its infrastructure completed, marking a significant milestone in Indonesia’s ambitious development plans.
