The Indonesian government has committed to supporting Nigeria in achieving a 60% increase in milk production and a 40% rise in meat production over the next five years.
Dr. Usra Harahap, the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, in Birnin Kebbi on Friday. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and enhance ongoing collaborations between Indonesia and Kebbi State in livestock development.
“This initiative focuses on artificial insemination and embryo transfer to establish advanced breeding facilities, sustainable pasture systems, and processing units for milk and meat,” Harahap explained. “Our goal is to significantly enhance livestock productivity and achieve self-sufficiency in animal production across Nigeria.”
Harahap emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to fostering agricultural growth in Kebbi, noting that the technical cooperation would improve genetic livestock quality and boost agricultural capacity. “This collaboration will also support reproductive technologies and capacity building, benefiting the entire African sub-region,” he added.
The ambassador announced plans to establish an artificial insemination center under the Kebbi Ministry of Animal Health and Fishery. The center will handle livestock testing, semen quality monitoring, and artificial insemination methods, serving as a catalyst for sustainable agricultural growth.
Governor Nasir Idris, represented by Deputy Governor Alhaji Umar Abubakar-Tafida, expressed gratitude to Indonesia for sponsoring the training of two Kebbi veterinary doctors on artificial insemination and for follow-up support to ensure the training’s impact.
“Kebbi boasts the highest number of veterinary doctors and livestock population in Nigeria. We are eager to deepen this partnership and appreciate Indonesia’s pledge to train more of our experts in embryo transfer technology,” Idris stated.
He highlighted Kebbi’s leading role in rice and wheat production, emphasizing the state’s potential for agricultural transformation through this partnership.
The collaboration, which builds on the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Indonesia since 1965, is expected to enhance livestock productivity, create economic opportunities, and strengthen ties between the two nations.
