Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez was involved in a tragic road accident on Tuesday morning, October 28, which resulted in the death of an 81-year-old man near the club’s training ground in northern Italy.

According to reports from Italian media, the incident occurred around 9:40 a.m. on Via Bergamo in Fenegro, in the province of Como, as Martinez was driving to Inter’s training complex at Appiano Gentile.

The victim, who was in an electric wheelchair, is believed to have suffered a medical episode moments before the collision, preventing him from moving out of the way.

Martinez, 27, was reportedly unharmed but visibly shaken. He immediately stopped his vehicle and attempted to provide first aid while awaiting emergency services.

Despite the swift response of both an ambulance and an air ambulance, the elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

In response to the tragedy, Inter Milan cancelled a scheduled press conference by manager Cristian Chivu, initially set for 1 p.m. The club is next set to face Fiorentina at the San Siro on Wednesday, October 29.

Martinez, who serves as Inter’s second-choice goalkeeper, was on the bench during the team’s 3–1 defeat to Napoli over the weekend.
