Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has called on the private sector to invest in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme by sponsoring community development projects initiated by corps members.
The governor made the appeal on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2 corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku. Represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, Oborevwori emphasized the importance of such investments in improving the living conditions of host communities while positively engaging corps members.
“My dear corps members, the NYSC, established over four decades ago, has consistently proven its relevance in the development of the nation. Its appeal to Nigerian youths remains strong despite challenges, including insecurity in some parts of the country,” he said.
He lauded the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which equips corps members with vital skills to address unemployment, urging them to take full advantage of it during their orientation.
Oborevwori assured the corps members of his administration’s commitment to supporting the scheme. “My administration is committed to providing the necessary resources, encouragement, and enabling environment to foster progress in the NYSC scheme,” he stated.
The governor revealed efforts to mobilize stakeholders and communities to prioritize the security and welfare of corps members, adding that the state government aims to transform the Issele-Uku camp into one of the best in the country.
“With God on our side and adequate financial resources, we shall achieve this objective,” he affirmed.
Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Kingsley Emu, also addressed the corps members, urging them to adapt to the realities of transitioning from academic life to a more demanding environment. He highlighted the orientation course’s physical and psychological training as essential for preparing them for the service year.
“Take full advantage of the various skill acquisition programmes offered by the scheme to address the challenge of post-service unemployment,” Emu advised.
Delta State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. John Kwaghe, commended the corps members for their dedication and urged them to contribute meaningfully to their host communities.
“Your service year presents a unique opportunity to make meaningful contributions. Serve with humility, diligence, and creativity. Be exemplary in your roles as teachers and leaders,” Kwaghe said.
He thanked the Delta State Government for its support, including the promise to provide a 150KVA generator to address power supply challenges at the camp. However, he appealed for urgent attention to the camp’s weak perimeter fencing, particularly at the rear.
A total of 2,159 prospective corps members, comprising 993 males and 1,166 females, have been registered at the camp.
Kwaghe urged community leaders to treat corps members as their children and prioritize their welfare and security, reiterating the NYSC’s impact on nation-building.
