Iran Denies Arrest Reports After Hamas Leader Assassination
Iran’s judiciary dismissed reports on Tuesday regarding the arrest of security officers following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, labeling the claims as false.
Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir refuted the allegations during a news conference, stating that reports from Western news outlets and social media about the arrests were unfounded. Despite thorough investigations after the attack, no arrests have been made, according to the ISNA news agency.
Earlier, The New York Times and The British Telegraph reported on the supposed arrests, citing Iranian officials. Additionally, social media accounts in Farsi speculated about a security breach and possible cooperation between Iranian agents and the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
The Iranian parliament’s security commission firmly denied these allegations, asserting that there was no infiltration of Iran’s security apparatus by Mossad.
Haniyeh, the Qatar-based leader of the Palestinian militant Islamist Hamas group, was assassinated last week in Tehran during a visit. Both Hamas and Iran blamed Israel for the attack and vowed retaliation, while Israel has yet to comment on Haniyeh’s death.
