Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has called for collective efforts among Middle Eastern nations to promote stability and security in the region.

Al-Sudani made the appeal during a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Baghdad, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Prime Minister’s media office on Monday.

The discussion focused on bilateral relations and the latest developments in Syria, Gaza, and Lebanon. Both leaders emphasized the need to uphold ceasefire agreements to de-escalate ongoing tensions.

“Iraq is ready to coordinate with neighboring countries, especially Türkiye, on addressing regional challenges,” Al-Sudani said, reiterating his country’s commitment to fostering stability.

Fidan, in turn, expressed Türkiye’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Iraq, emphasizing its commitment to the strategic Development Road project and agreements in sectors like energy, education, trade, and banking.

Fidan also met Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid to discuss regional issues. Rashid stressed the importance of dialogue, de-escalation, and sustained joint efforts to eliminate threats posed by the Islamic State (IS) and other extremist groups.

During the meeting, Fidan proposed forming a regional alliance involving Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Türkiye to combat IS, dismantle its strongholds, and disrupt its funding sources, aiming to secure long-term stability in the region.
