Iraqi Oil Ministry Rejects U.S. Congressmen’s Claims of Illegal Oil Sales to Iran
The Iraqi Oil Ministry has strongly refuted accusations made by several U.S. Congress members, alleging that Iraq is smuggling oil to Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions. The ministry called the claims “fabrications without any basis.”
These allegations were outlined in a letter reportedly sent by five U.S. Congress members to President Joe Biden, accusing Iraqi officials, including Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani, of assisting Iran in evading sanctions through illegal oil smuggling operations.
The letter also urged President Biden to cancel Ghani’s upcoming visit to the United States, where he is scheduled to discuss gas investment opportunities, until a full investigation is conducted.
In response, the Iraqi Oil Ministry expressed “astonishment and condemnation” at the accusations, emphasizing that Iraq’s oil exports are under the scrutiny of international inspectors. It further noted that the country’s waters are tightly monitored by Iraqi naval forces, ensuring no illegal activities occur.
