Israel Claims Hamas Spokesman Abu Obeida Killed in Gaza Airstrike

Israel says it has killed Abu Obeida, the longtime spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing, in an airstrike on Gaza City — a significant moment in the ongoing conflict.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant praised the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and internal security agency Shin Bet for what he called a “flawless operation,” though no specific details about the time or confirmation of the strike were given.

The IDF said the airstrike targeted a “key terrorist” in the al-Rimal neighbourhood on Saturday. While Israel did not officially name Obeida at the time, reports quickly emerged identifying him as the intended target.

Hamas has not confirmed Obeida’s death. The group did, however, accuse Israel of killing and injuring dozens of civilians in the same area, following strikes on residential buildings.

The targeted apartment was located in a six-storey building previously used as a dental clinic. Witnesses say five missiles struck the second and third floors simultaneously. Some described seeing large sums of money scattered in the air, with some stolen by bystanders before being recovered by Hamas operatives.

Abu Obeida, believed to be around 40 years old, was one of the most recognizable figures in Hamas’s military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades. Known for always appearing masked in a keffiyeh, he delivered frequent speeches denouncing Israel and became a symbolic figure for Hamas supporters across the Middle East.

Israeli intelligence says his location was identified after “extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering” by Shin Bet and the IDF’s Intelligence Directorate.

In what may have been his final public statement on Friday, Obeida warned that the fate of Israeli hostages still in Gaza would be tied to the fate of Hamas fighters, as Israel intensifies operations in Gaza City.
