Israel, Hamas Swap Hostages for Prisoners Amid Fragile Ceasefire
Israel and Hamas conducted another prisoner exchange on Saturday, marking the second such swap since the fragile ceasefire began in the Gaza Strip last weekend. This truce, aimed at ending the most devastating conflict between Israel and Hamas, has paused airstrikes and rocket attacks while allowing increased humanitarian aid into the territory.
The latest exchange saw four Israeli soldiers—Karina Ariev, 20; Daniella Gilboa, 20; Naama Levy, 20; and Liri Albag, 19—freed in return for 200 Palestinian prisoners, including 120 serving life sentences for deadly attacks on Israelis. The Israeli soldiers were captured during Hamas’ October 7, 2023, cross-border assault on the Nahal Oz base, which resulted in the deaths of over 60 soldiers.
Following the exchange, Israel is expected to withdraw from the Netzarim corridor, an area dividing Gaza, and permit displaced Palestinians to return north on foot. Vehicular movement remains restricted for now.
The ceasefire’s six-week timeframe leaves uncertainty about what comes next. Many hope it will end a conflict that has devastated Gaza, displacing millions and leaving hundreds of thousands at risk of famine. Palestinian health officials report over 47,000 deaths during the war, including women and children, though militant casualties remain unclear.
This latest development underscores the high stakes for both sides as they navigate fragile steps toward potential de-escalation.
