Israeli airstrikes hit southern Beirut on Sunday following an evacuation warning issued by the Israeli army to civilians in Hezbollah strongholds, Lebanese state media reported.
Two strikes targeted Beirut’s Choueifat district, with one hitting a residential building near a mosque and hospital in Haret Hreik, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. This comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, of attempting to assassinate him through a drone attack on his residence in Caesarea.
The Israeli military had earlier warned residents to evacuate areas near Hezbollah-affiliated facilities, saying, “The IDF will act against Hezbollah’s interests in the near future.”
Netanyahu condemned the drone attack, stating, “The attempt by Iran’s proxy Hezbollah to assassinate me and my wife today was a grave mistake. Anyone who tries to harm Israel’s citizens will pay a heavy price.”
Iran, which arms and finances Hezbollah, acknowledged the group’s involvement in the attack, though Hezbollah has yet to claim responsibility. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated since late September, with both sides exchanging threats of retaliation.
