Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Iyabo Ojo, has said she was unaware that spraying money—including foreign currencies—at events is against the law.

In a statement posted to her Instagram account (@iyaboojofespris) on Tuesday, Ojo addressed her recent visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 5, following an official invitation she received while in the UK.

Upon her return, she honoured the invitation and was questioned by EFCC officials, who showed her footage from her daughter’s wedding where guests were seen spraying both naira and foreign currencies.

“I was asked if I knew this was illegal, and I explained that I thought only mutilating the naira was an offence,” she wrote. “I was surprised to learn that spraying any currency, including dollars, is also not allowed.”

Ojo noted that she was released the same day after answering questions about her personal and professional background. Her lawyer, O.I. Salami, will represent her in case of further inquiries.

The actress did not confirm whether she personally sprayed money at the event but used the opportunity to caution others.

“Given this experience, I strongly advise against spraying any currency in Nigeria to avoid issues with the EFCC. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider this long-standing tradition,” she added.

Her Instagram post has since drawn over 47,000 comments, with fellow actress Funke Akindele among those showing support.
