Jealous Woman Arrested for Acid Attack on 21-Year-Old Friend in India
A 21-year-old woman, Shraddha Das, is recovering from serious burn injuries after being attacked with acid by a former friend in what police say was a jealous assault in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India.
The attack occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in Awadhpuri Colony, under the jurisdiction of Gaurighat police station. According to authorities, the suspect, 22-year-old Ishita Sahu, lured Shraddha outside her home before splashing acid on her during a brief confrontation at the gate, then fled the scene.
Shraddha sustained burns covering 50% of her body and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors say her condition is now stable.
Initial police investigations suggest the motive was jealousy. The two women, once close friends, reportedly stopped communicating two months ago after Shraddha blocked Ishita’s phone number.
“Statements collected during the inquiry suggest Ishita was envious of Shraddha’s progress and independence,” a police spokesperson said.
Shraddha’s mother echoed the sentiment, stating that Ishita had always envied her daughter’s life, saying, “Shraddha had everything—comforts, stability, ambition. Ishita wanted all of it.”
Ishita Sahu has been arrested and is currently under interrogation. Authorities are also searching for her parents, who are reportedly on the run.
