Nigerian football legend Austin “JJ” Okocha has applauded Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman for clinching the African Player of the Year award, attributing the victory to his exceptional skills, dedication, and work ethic.
Lookman, who plays for Italian club Atalanta, secured the prestigious honor last week in Marrakesh, Morocco, beating top contenders such as PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Brighton’s Simon Adingra, and Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy. The 27-year-old winger has now joined the ranks of six Nigerians who have claimed this coveted title.
Speaking in an interview on Soccer TV’s YouTube channel, as reported by The Sun, Okocha, a former BBC African Footballer of the Year, highlighted the rigorous criteria behind the award.
“The CAF Award is not just about how well you play on the pitch,” said the former Super Eagles captain. “Your attitude on the pitch, your interactions with teammates, and your responses to coaches are all evaluated alongside your tactical performances.”
Okocha praised Lookman’s discipline and consistency, noting that his achievement reflects a comprehensive assessment of his qualities. “For Ademola Lookman to be awarded African Best Player of the Year, it simply means he has excelled across all these areas.”
Lookman’s win underscores Nigeria’s strong presence in African football, with fans and players celebrating another milestone in the nation’s rich sporting history.
