The Kano State Government has fulfilled its promise to support families affected by the Uromi Attack, disbursing cash assistance and food items one year after the tragic incident.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this during a visit to Bunkure Local Government Area, where the victims’ families gathered.

He explained that the intervention was carried out on the directive of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after it was discovered that an earlier pledge made during a condolence visit had not been redeemed.

According to Waiya, 16 families of those killed received ₦300,000 each, while survivors were given ₦200,000 each, in addition to two bags of rice per beneficiary.

He recalled that the governor, alongside his counterpart in Edo State, had visited the community following the attack, during which about 19 people were reportedly killed and 13 others survived the mob violence while travelling.

Waiya noted that while Kano State has now met its obligations, the Edo State Government has also assured that compensation to victims’ families would be paid soon.

“An account has already been opened for the families, and we are expecting that the Edo State Government will release the funds any moment from now,” he said.

The commissioner urged affected families to remain patient, assuring them that both state governments are committed to providing support and ensuring justice. He described the incident as a “national calamity” and extended condolences, praying for the repose of those who lost their lives.

Waiya added that a committee set up by the Kano State Government, led by the deputy governor, had engaged with authorities in Edo State to ensure proper handling of the situation. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to standing with the victims’ families in the aftermath of the tragedy.
