Gov. Dikko Radda of Katsina State has called on journalists to uphold professionalism as a tool for fostering peaceful coexistence and national development.
Speaking on Tuesday in Katsina during a lecture and get-together marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the governor, represented by the Commissioner of Information and Culture, Dr Bala Salisu-Zango, acknowledged the union’s historical contributions.
Radda commended the NUJ’s role in Nigeria’s independence struggle and its continued support for democratic growth post-independence.
He emphasized the need for media professionals to align with government efforts in combating corruption and insecurity, stating that:
“Without peace, there will be no any development.”
The governor also urged journalists to adhere strictly to journalism ethics, particularly in the fight against fake news and inciting reports.
He criticised the activities of some social media handlers, accusing them of circulating falsehoods without regard for the consequences.
In his remarks, the NUJ National President, Mr Alhassan Yahaya, represented by the NUJ Zonal Secretary, Zone A, Abdulrazak Bello Kaura, underscored the need for responsible journalism.
“The role of the journalist is not just to inform, but to inform responsibly,” Yahaya said.
“I, therefore, urge all journalists, especially those reporting from conflict zones, to reflect professionalism, accuracy, balance, and empathy in their work. Let us report with the intention to heal, unite, and contribute to restoring normalcy, not to incite or inflame tensions.
“We must also hold the government accountable, but we must do so ethically and truthfully. Our watchdog role is vital in ensuring good governance, transparency, and a corruption-free society.”
Yahaya also condemned the spate of killings across the country and appreciated the Armed Forces for their sacrifices.
On his part, the NUJ Katsina State Council Chairman, Mr Tukur Dan-Ali, described the anniversary as a celebration of 70 years of patriotism and dedicated service to Nigeria.
He praised past union leaders for their contributions to the growth and relevance of the journalism profession.
The event featured a lecture titled “NUJ at 70: A Historical Perspective” delivered by Dr Samaila Balarabe of the Department of Mass Communication, Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic.
