The Katsina State Government has approved N160 million for upgrade of the 700 years old Danmarna Cemetery, located in Katsina metropolis.
The Chairman of the state’s Zakat and Waqf Board, Dr Ahmad Filinsamji, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the graveyard in Katsina on Tuesday.
Narrating how part of the money was raised, he said “every year, Hajj pilgrims perform animal sacrifice (Hadya) to express gratitude for being able to perform the pilgrimage.
“During the 2024 Hajj, we (Zakat and Waqf Board) decided to sell the meat from the sacrifice and realised about N127 million. Upon our return to Nigeria, we decided to use the money to upgrade the cemetery.
“And when we approached Gov. Dikko Radda and presented our estimate of N160 million, which he completed for us, it is the money we’re using for the upgrade.
“The project comprised the provision of modern matuary, in case of accidents, before the relatives of any deceased are found.
“We also realised that many people involved in bathing the dead are not familiar with the correct processes, therefore we’re going to provide a training centre.”
He added that the project also includes the provision of ambulances, pavements to have easy routes within the graveyard, solar electricity, among other important things.
According to Filinsamji, the graveyard has eight segments, explaining that whenever one is filled up, it will be closed, and another one will be utilised.
The Zakat and Waqf boss added that concrete benches for people with leg problems to rest during burial will be provided and also the reconstruction of the fence.
He noted that “the project has so far reached at least 60 per cent, hoping to be completed in May.”
Filinsamji also said that the board is planning to upgrade three other cemeteries in Katsina town after the 2025 Hajj.
He debunked the rumour that after the upgrade, the board would start collecting money from the public before their relatives are buried, saying there was never a plan like that.
