Kenya Airports Authority Assures Operations Will Continue Despite Planned Strike
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announced on Friday that it has put contingency measures in place to ensure that airport operations will not be disrupted by a strike planned by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) on Aug. 19.
KAWU, which represents employees of airports and Kenya Airways, has threatened to commence industrial action on Monday in response to a proposed agreement with India’s Adani Airports Holdings to develop Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
The union has raised concerns that the Adani deal could result in job losses and an influx of non-Kenyan workers, describing the agreement in their strike notice as an “intended sale” of the airport.
However, the Kenyan government has clarified that the airport is not for sale and that no final decision has been made regarding the proposed public-private partnership aimed at upgrading the airport, a key travel hub in East Africa.
In a statement, KAA reassured the public that discussions are ongoing between the Ministries of Roads and Transport, Labour and Social Protection, KAA Management, and KAWU to reach a resolution and avert the strike.
