Kenyan Nursing Student Dies in U.S., Family Seeks Support for Burial
The Kenyan community in the U.S. is mourning the untimely death of 23-year-old Kevin Omwenga, a nursing student at Oakwood College in Alabama, who passed away suddenly on June 19, 2025.
Originally from Kenya, Kevin had recently switched from accounting to nursing, inspired by his mother’s career in healthcare. “I want to be a nurse like you, mommy,” he once told her — a reflection of the purpose and love that drove him.
Kevin was the son of Martha Omwenga and Ben Muko, and a beloved brother to Helen, Abel, and Alexis. Known for his joyful spirit, kindness, and deep faith, Kevin was a regular face at the Kenyan Community Church and a devoted member of the Pathfinder Club.
“Kevin was full of life and had such a bright future. He was a light,” a family friend said, echoing the deep sense of loss felt across the Kenyan-American diaspora.
While the cause of his death has not been made public, the impact of his passing is being widely felt. Friends, church members, and the broader diaspora community have rallied around the grieving family, sending messages of condolence and support.
To assist with funeral arrangements and offer support during this time of grief, the family has launched a GoFundMe campaign. Contributions will go towards burial expenses and bringing closure to the devastated family.
“We are heartbroken,” said Kevin’s father. “But your love and support give us strength.”
Well-wishers are encouraged to donate or share the official GoFundMe link provided by the family.
