Kenyan Opposition Demands Ruto’s Resignation Over Call to Shoot Protesters
Kenya’s opposition leaders have called for President William Ruto to resign or face impeachment following his controversial directive urging police to shoot and “break the legs” of protesters caught looting or vandalizing property.
The backlash intensified as mourners gathered on Friday to bury Boniface Kariuki, a civilian allegedly shot at close range by police during a recent demonstration.
Opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the president’s remarks, describing them as unconstitutional and a violation of human rights. “No leader has the authority to sanction brutality against citizens exercising their right to protest,” Musyoka said.
President Ruto, speaking on Wednesday, defended his stance by saying he would not allow “anarchy disguised as peaceful protests” to destabilize the country.
His remarks have sparked widespread criticism from civil society groups and human rights advocates, who argue that such statements could fuel further violence and undermine democratic freedoms.
Tensions remain high in Kenya as demonstrations continue over rising living costs and government reforms.
