Kenyan Street Vendor Shot by Police Declared Brain Dead Amid Growing Outrage

A 22-year-old street vendor, Boniface Kariuki, who was shot in the head by police during protests in Nairobi, has been declared brain dead, his family confirmed Monday, further fueling public anger over police brutality in Kenya.

Kariuki was injured on June 17 while selling face masks near the scene of a protest sparked by the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang in police custody. He was caught in the crossfire when officers opened fire on demonstrators.

“Doctors told us his brain is no longer functioning, even though his heart still beats with the aid of life support,” said family spokesperson Emily Wanjira. “We know what that means. We are just waiting for the final word.”

Kariuki has undergone several surgeries at the Kenyatta National Hospital, but bullet fragments remain lodged in his brain. His condition has triggered renewed condemnation of police conduct and calls for justice.

Protesters are also urging the government to cover Kariuki’s rising medical expenses after his family issued a public appeal for financial help.

Two officers connected to the shooting have been arraigned but are yet to be formally charged. They remain in custody pending investigations.

The incident is the latest flashpoint in a wave of unrest following Ojwang’s death in custody. The state-funded human rights commission reported that at least 19 people were killed during nationwide protests last Wednesday.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen has defended the police response, calling the protests “terrorism disguised as dissent” and urging police to “shoot on sight” anyone attacking stations — a statement widely condemned by civil society and legal experts.

Kariuki’s family is demanding swift justice and full accountability. In connection with Ojwang’s death, six individuals — including three police officers — have been charged with murder. An autopsy revealed Ojwang died from injuries sustained during an assault.

Deputy police chief Eliud Lagat, who filed the defamation complaint that led to Ojwang’s arrest, has stepped aside amid mounting calls for his resignation. He has denied any wrongdoing.
