King Charles to Visit US Amid Diplomatic Strains Over Trump Criticism

Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, will proceed with a planned state visit to the United States later this month, despite political tensions sparked by recent remarks from US President Donald Trump.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the king and Queen Camilla will travel to the US from April 27 to 30 as part of events marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

President Trump welcomed the visit, expressing admiration for the monarch and describing the upcoming engagement as “terrific.” The trip follows Trump’s own state visit to the United Kingdom in September 2025, which was widely viewed as an effort to reinforce the longstanding ties between both nations.

Tensions Over Foreign Policy

However, the visit comes against the backdrop of diplomatic friction. President Trump has publicly criticised the UK government for refusing to allow US forces to use British bases for operations linked to the conflict in Iran.

He has also repeatedly taken aim at Prime Minister Keir Starmer, questioning his leadership and drawing unfavourable comparisons with former wartime leader Winston Churchill.

These comments have sparked backlash within the UK, with opposition figures urging the government to reconsider the state visit. Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, criticised the decision to proceed, describing it as a sign of weakness in the face of what he called provocative rhetoric from Washington.

Diplomatic Significance

State visits are typically arranged at the request of the British government and are used to strengthen diplomatic and strategic relationships. Analysts suggest the decision to move ahead with the visit may reflect efforts by the Starmer administration to manage tensions and maintain stable ties with the US.

President Trump has previously shown strong enthusiasm for royal engagements, highlighting the ceremonial welcome he received at Windsor Castle during his 2025 visit.

The upcoming trip will mark King Charles III’s first state visit to the United States since ascending the throne. He has visited the country multiple times in the past as Prince of Wales, while his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, undertook four state visits during her reign.

In addition to the US engagements, the king is also scheduled to visit Bermuda—his first trip to the British overseas territory as monarch.
