The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has entered into a strategic partnership with British Cycling as part of efforts to advance sports development and deepen international collaboration.

The partnership reflects Lagos State’s commitment to sports diplomacy, institutional learning and sustainable development within the global sports ecosystem.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a delegation from British Cycling, led by its Sport and Participation Director, Amy Gardner, paid a working visit to the Commission, where both sides held high-level discussions.

The engagement focused on knowledge exchange, skills transfer and technical capacity building, with the aim of strengthening the cycling culture and infrastructure in Lagos State.

Speaking during the meeting, the Director-General of the LSSC, Lekan Fatodu, described the collaboration as a deliberate and results-oriented step aligned with Lagos’ broader sports development strategy.

“Sports has become a powerful tool for diplomacy and development. Our collaboration with British Cycling is focused on strengthening technical capacity, deepening institutional competence and adapting global best practices to deliver measurable value for athletes, coaches, administrators and cyclists in Lagos,” Fatodu said.

He also praised the enabling environment created by the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting that strong policy direction and institutional support have positioned Lagos to engage effectively with international partners and pursue excellence across the sports value chain.

In her remarks, Gardner commended Lagos State for its ambition and clear vision for sports development.

“We are impressed by the Lagos State Sports Commission’s openness to collaboration. There is clear potential for knowledge sharing and skills transfer that can enhance participation, develop talent and support the long-term growth of cycling,” she said.

Both parties agreed to formalise the partnership through a structured framework, which will include exchange programmes, technical workshops and other collaborative initiatives.

NAN reports that the partnership further highlights Lagos’ growing reputation as a progressive hub for sports development in Africa and represents a strategic step towards achieving international standards in cycling, while promoting youth empowerment, international cooperation and national pride.
